Yet here we are literally celebrating Balkanization, a term that has always carried the connotation of insurmountable tribal and geographic feuds, and preparing for its controversial finale, an independent Kosovo. That will make for seven independent countries carved out of Yugoslavia. Further afield, the breakup of the Soviet Union has yielded 15 new countries, and even in places that have no deficit of prosperity or democracy, like Catalonia, the Basque country or Scotland, sovereign yearnings run strong. The more the world is globalized, it seems, the more people treasure their traditions, languages and differences. Go figure.

Aquí encara estem literalment celebrant la Balcanització, un terme que sempre ha portat associat connotacions d'insuperables disputes geogràfiques i tribals i que s'està preparant per al seu controvertit final, un Kosovo independent. Això farà que hi hagi ara set països on abans només hi havia una Iugoslàvia. Molt més lluny encara, el trencament de la Unió Soviètica ha donat pas a 15 nous estats, i fins i tot en llocs on no existeix cap mena de dèficit democràtic o de prosperitat, com ara Catalunya, el País Basc o Escòcia, els seus anhels de sobirania avancen amb força. Quant més globalitzat es torna el món, sembla que més gent vulgui protegir les seves tradicions, llengües i diferències. Ho podeu imaginar?
